Recommended Fluency Activities for Students

After basic reading fluency activities for students is a great idea. These are aimed at helping to  have a better reading comprehension and practice better reading so that their listeners can easily comprehend the text.Fluency, like reading, is a learned skill. The Oh! No Game

This is a fun game for children that will enhance their fluency at the same time. Have 12 blank cards and write sentences on the 10 cards and “Oh! No” on the two cards. Put them all in the bowl.Each student will get a card and then he will read it aloud. He gets to keep the card if he has read the sentences correctly. He will put the card back to the bowl if not. If the student gets the “Oh! No” card, he has to return all of his cards in the bowl. The student with the most number of cards at the end of the game is the winner.

Reading People

Provide 10 pictures of different people and describe them at the back. Each student will pick a card and will read the description to the class.This may be so simple compared to other fluency activities. So this is best applied if you want to have a break from too much exciting games.

Room Reading

Post reading materials around the room. During break time, the students can roam around the room and read their selected materials. This is a good way to practice fluency without assistance from other people. Replace the reading materials regularly, say a month, so they won’t be so boring for the students.

With these fun fluency activities, the students will surely have a reason to learn better reading and comprehension without getting bored.
